Portable ultrasonic flow meter is a type of flow meter that measures the velocity of a fluid with ultrasound to calculate volume flow. Using ultrasonic transducers, An Ultrasonic flow meter can measure the average velocity along the path of an emitted beam of ultrasound, by averaging the difference in measured transit time between the pulses of ultrasound propagating into and against the direction of the flow.

The SL1168P ultrasonic transducers strap-on the outside of pipes from 1″ to 48″ (DN25 to DN mm) diameter. The ultrasonic signal works through common pipe materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, ductile iron, cast iron, PVC, PVDF, fiberglass, copper, brass, aluminum and pipes with bonded liners including epoxy, rubber and Teflon. Transducers can be mounted without shutting down flow and there is no obstruction or pressure drop. It measures and totallizers forward and reverse flow.

Explosion-proof enclosure (Optional) :

If going to place a sl1188 ultrasonic flow meters in an explosive atmosphere  (hazardous area), the ultrasonic flow meter’s explosion proof enclosure should be installed in a positively vented area. Before connecting the power supply, the user should create positive ventilation more than 5 times the enclosure volume for air exchange. The user must install the ultrasonic flow meters wiring in a safe area that  would not cause sparking or arcing due to short circuiting or wire breakage. Cables and wires should be installed through explosion-proof conduit. Explosion-proof threaded conduit unions should be used between the wired conduits, conduits and junction boxes. The available thread. engagement  into the fitting should be more than 5-6 threads. When flexible connections are needed, ex-proof flexible cable conduits can be used.

Installation Site Selection


When selecting a measurement site, it is important to select an area where the fluid flow profile is fully developed to guarantee a highly accurate measurement. Use the following guidelines to select a proper installation site:

  • Choose a section of pipe that is always full of liquid, such as a vertical pipe with flow in the upward direction or a full horizontal pipe.
  • Ensure enough straight  pipe length at least equal to the figure shown below for the upstream and down stream transducers installation.

The SL1168 offers low power consumption and high reliability at a very competitive price. The SL1168 features a programmable frequency output, a relay output and a programmable current loop output. RS 232 and MODBUS RTU are standard, while RS 485 is optional.
The SL1688 is packaged in a lightweight polycarbonate IP65 housing and includes clamp-on encapsulated IP 68 sensors that are easy to install and require no pipe cutting, thereby reducing installation and labor costs.
